Kombucha - the latest fad? Well up to a month ago I had never even heard of it.....now I am almost addicted to it (in a good way).
What, you are asking IS Kombucha? Well, :- Kombucha consists of tea, sugar, clean water and a scoby. "Scoby" stands for symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts.
Sounds nasty that Scoby bit eh? Don't be put off, we use cultures in bread making, yoghurt, blue cheese, alcohol production to name a few. Left Field explains it for you.
The taste? Depending on the added flavors, it can taste fruity, floral, spicy, or herbaceous. It has a flavour similar to sparkling apple cider but with a more pronounced sourish taste (not screw-your-face-up sour). After the tea is fermented, the finished drink actually doesn't taste like brewed tea anymore.
The benefits of drinking it? It's delicious, that would be benefit enough but I have started coming in from work and reaching for a bottle of Buch instead of my usual wine or gin - that's got to be good - right? (although I did read that you could add your gin to the kombucha...hmmm)
Hopefully I've made you want to try it - I have tried loads with lavender, lime, ginger, mixed berries, old socks, (might have made the last one up) but I actually prefer the plain ones made with different teas, which gives them a different taste......All Hail The Buch!!!
